How To Take Perfect “People Pictures” In Digital Photography

Posted in DigitalPhotography by admin

One of the things people ask me most about digital photography is how to take perfect “people pictures.” Digital photography is great for people because you can simply delete the ones you don’t like, and show them, on the spot, what the digital photo looks like.
In any digital photography session, whether it be portrait photography or photography at a birthday party it takes prior knowledge to getting “perfect people” digital photos.
So here are the digital photography secrets to this type of photography.
People Photography Secret number 1:

Horizontal vs. vertical

Most people who do digital photography of people hold the digital camera horizontal. Not sure why this is; most likely because the digital camera is built that way, but really you can do well with holding the camera vertical as well. Horizontal digital photos of people are ok, but work best when taking a group photo rather than a single photo of someone. A vertical angle for your digital people photo can give you a great composition for close up and it tells you a lot more about that person that a horizontal will. Horizontal angles in digital photography of single people tends to increase the amount of potential clutter and irrelevant objects in the frame.

People Photography Secret Number 2

Where to put your people in the frame

In digital photography, pictures of people work best by creating some interesting composition. Don’t put your person in the center of the frame just because everyone else does their digital photography that way; be unique and creative and you’ll get a much be result. And good digital photography is all about capturing that special moment of someone to last and reflect something positive about that person, right?

People Photography Secret Number 3

Go Candid. Personally, in my experience as someone who does digital photography for a living, I can tell you that candid digital photographs work so much better then staid photos. It’s so much better to capture someone just as they laugh at a funny joke, or see their friend for the first time in a while, or even talking quietly to others, it so much more interesting and creates a positive photo of someone than a shot of them looking into the camera with a posed shot; hey anyone can do that. But do take that digital photo with them laughing and not knowing they’re being photographed captures a side of them that not everyone sees. It’ll show them in good spirits and create a positive image for all those who see that digital photo from now on. Get creative with people photography; try black and white and sepia. And even try taking the digital photo of them doing something they love, like playing an instrument for example.

Good luck!

How To Get Clarity In Your Digital Photography When Taking Photos Close Up

Posted in DigitalPhotography by admin

If you’ve ever wanted to get a really good, clear close up shots with your digital photography but haven’t had much luck then here’s a bit of good news.

There are a lot of wonderful aspects to digital photography and getting close up digital photos are one of them. When I say ‘close up’ I am talking about taking a digital photo with a very short depth of field. To understand how to get suburb results for close up digital photography I’ll first explain some of the photography terms so you can learn faster.

Here is a definition:

“Digital photography with images that are life size or larger.”

That’s a good description, lets look at another way to describe close up digital photography:

“A method of getting close-up pictures of a subject by using Marco accessories attached to the camera’s lens.”

This second close up digital photography definition is definitely worth learning. It simply means that when you are getting close up shots, the image is very large. In order to make something very large you simply zoom in right? Well yes and no. You can zoom in all you like but you need to get the digital photography image looking clear, not just large. And in order to understand how to get good, clear close up digital images we have to first work with our depth of field. (And just on digital zoom- I would recommend you zoom with an optical lens over a digital lens any day.)

Depth of field simply means taking two objects in your digital image, the furthest and the closest, and then seeing how much focus is there. In other words:

“The amount of distance between the nearest and farthest objects that appear in acceptably sharp focus in a photograph. Depth of field depends on the size of the aperture, the distance of the camera from the subject, and the focal length of the lens. The bigger the aperture, the greater the depth of field.”

So in order to get good, clear close up digital photography images you first have to work with a short depth of field (only the closest thing is in focus) and add some macro lenses so your subject that is in focus retains sharpness and clarity.

In digital photography terms a macro lens is what gives you the clarity up close because it has the capability to focus extremely closely (like a magnifying glass would for your eyes) and the minute detail of your close up subject is in clear focus. You can usually fill the frame quite confidently, giving you an enhanced clear digital image.

You will notice on your digital camera setting the icon for flower. This setting is not only to take flowers, it is there so you can get a bit better focus up close than you would on your other setting such as a landscape setting.

What happens is the camera changes its focus from usually a fair way in front of it to abut 30 cm in front to get good clear digital photos up close.

So now I have told you the definitions and given you a basic understanding of what means what in close up terms, now I’m going to tell you how to get good, clear close up shots.

Firstly when ever you do macro photography consider your lenses carefully. They are sometimes called magnifiers, or magnifying lenses or macro lenses. Then work out how close in you really need to get and pick your lens accordingly. Don’t just get the standard pack of macro lenses because the shop assistant tells you to, get the right ones that fit your camera and that you can work with easily, in other words only spend what will give you the desired result.

Next understand that when working with a very short depth of field the less light there is on your subject. It’s a common problem with macro photography, so make sure you have a lot of light on your subject. It’s quite simple really, there is less space on something close up because of just that; it’s a smaller space. If you can’t light up your subject then try increasing your exposure. Open your aperture more to get the desired effect.

Thirdly always get the digital camera to help you. Just because you are now using a macro lens doesn’t mean you can’t still use the flower icon setting on your digital camera to increase the desired close up effect. On most digital cameras doing this makes macro photography a little easier as the camera “knows” what you are doing and aids you accordingly.

So there you have it- the beginnings of macro digital photography. Always get good lenses and make sure you have plenty of light and use the flower setting if you need to.

Macro digital photography is a lot of fun. You can black and white digital photography using abstract subjects- that’s always fun, and you can really get creative and experiment with some amazing effects.

Good luck!

The Magic of a Photo Book

Posted in Photograpy by admin

As a parent, I’ve watched my children flock to the old photo albums. Photos are like printed memories, and the photo albums have never been off limits in our family. They love looking through the photos albums rediscovering their memories. The photos are all (film) prints of course. Cost me a small fortune - clicking away - and having the film developed.

Now with my new digital camera I hardly know myself. It is much easier to snap digital photos - as it doesn’t cost a thing! Just quietly - I even think I have become a better photographer. Being able to preview your snap shot on the go is so helpful. I’ve collected thousands of digital photos so far. Printed a few on normal paper - but the magic of the ‘film print’ photo can’t be beat.

Meanwhile my digital photos are sitting on my hard drive and I have been trialling different ideas to easily have the digital photos available for my family to enjoy. Until someone introduced me to the “Photo Book”. Tah-dah Oh wow! So easy and so available! The quality was superb - like an expensive home and garden magazine with a hard cover. Each page of the photo book I could design myself with interesting backgrounds and added text.

We were all looking forward to receiving our first photo book - ordered online. Wouldn’t you know it Disaster! As I brought out the new photo book to show off to the kids - they were all so excited and one of the kids spilled their drink on our new photo book! You know what it is like, too many little hands, all trying to see different pages at the same time. Having a drink spilled on a standard photo album would have been a disaster. The old prints would have been ruined. Getting reprints made can be difficult - as the negatives are not always found easily. If you are anything like me, the photo packet gets stored in a drawer with many others, and the really old ones are sitting in a box in the garage. But since the digital photos were online I was able order a new photo book and it was delivered a few weeks later at my door. So easy!

There is a lot to be said for keeping your precious memories online with a trustworthy photo website. You never know what kind of mishap is waiting for you around the corner. In fact, I did not just re-order one photo book; I re-order two photo books at a discount. My mother was so impressed, she wanted a photo book for herself.

Marjolein is a mother of two and a photo enthusiast. Memories are precious, and she uses http://www.funwithphotos.co.nz
to store her memories online for easy sharing and creating fun products.
